Christmas

The holidays can be such an emotional time and every year I try to capture some of that feeling, whatever it might be, in song. They are not always good or memorable songs, nor are they always joyful, but they are always an emotional exercise "in the moment." Here are a few that have lasted. May they add in some measure to your holidays.

NO PRESENT LIKE THE TIME      MP3    RM
By Tim Bays/Randy Handley
© 1993 In Cahoots Music, (ASCAP), Randy Handley Music (BMI)

Verse 1
Christmas time is coming
And there's so much to be done
We sometimes get so busy
We miss out on all the fun
So just remember one thing
As you hurry on you way
Don't put off until tomorrow
Love that you might give today

Chorus
There is no time like the present
For showing that you care
And there is no present like the time
That we get to share
The greatest gifts of all
Are not that hard to find
It's not the money but the moments
We spend at Christmas time

Verse 2
Christmas time is almost here
So trim the tree with lights
And sing the old time carols
Noel and Silent Night
Cause days are growing shorter
Sure as children grow too fast
So let's go build that snowman
And make the sunshine last...(Chorus)

It's not the money but the moments
We spend at Christmas time

THREE LITTLE PENNIES      MP3    RM
By Tim Bays/Kim Tribble
© 1990 In Cahoots Music, Brian's Dream (ASCAP)

Verse 1
There was an old blind man
Who stood on a corner downtown
He was holding a cup, filled up with nothing
From the Christmas shopping crowd
And though I barely came up to the top of his cane
I reached up and gave every cent to my name

Chorus 1
Three little pennies were all that I had
One that I'd found and two from my dad
Three little pennies not much of a gift
But dad said that's plenty if it's all you can give

Verse 2
That evening my dad told a wonderful story to me
'Bout a child in a manger and wise men who came
Bearing gifts on the first Christmas Eve
But there was a part I was sure he made up
'Bout a stable boy who couldn't give much

Chorus 2
Three little pennies were all that he had
One that he'd found and two from his dad
Three little pennies not much of a gift
But dad said that's plenty if it's all he could give

Verse 3
Next morning was Christmas and I had prayed hard for a bike
But all that I found was the tiniest box
With three shiny pennies inside
I was so disappointed cause I had been good
But times had been bad so I understood ... then dad said

Chorus 3
Three little pennies were all that you had
But you gave them freely so I give them back
Three little pennies not much of a gift
But your bike is outside cause you've learned how to give

THE FOURTH WISE MAN      MP3    RM
By Tim Bays/Kin Vassey
© 1992 In Cahoots Music, Clay Basket Music, Yellow Creek Music/BMG (ASCAP)

Verse 1
Two nights out of Ninevah
With many nights to go
Following a shining star
Our prohets had foretold
We carried gold and frankincense
And myrrh to God knows who
I was freezing on that camel, man
And feeling like a fool

Verse
Not knowing where we traveled
We stumbled through that land
And so I thanked the gods to see
The fires of Bethlehem
But when we finally found the place
That star had singled out
A dirty little manger
And a child were all we found

Chorus 1
Could he have been the one
That little child crowned in straw?
Was he the king who’d come
To save the world, to hold in awe?
Surely we were wrong
Did we miss a sign?
So I traveled on
Hoping I would find
The one...the son...of god

Verse 3
There were four of us who found him
Just three who blessed his birth
While I was cursed to wander
Forever on this earth
And over twenty centuries
While millions have believed
A million times I’ve wondered
Was I wrong to leave?

Chorus 2
Could he have been the one
That little child crowned in straw?
Was he the king who’d come
To save the world, to hold in awe?
Surely I was wrong
Did I miss a sign?
Now all the years I lost
When He was right there all the time
The one...the son...of god

IT'S NOT CHRISTMAS      MP3    RM
By Tim Bays/Nancy Peacock
© 1993 In Cahoots Music (ASCAP), Washington Street Music (BMI)

Verse 1
Like a fireplace without a crackling fire
Or an empty church without that midnight choir
A glass of wine with no one to raise it to
It's not Christmas without you

Verse 2
Like naked trees without their coat of snow
And presents all wrapped up without a bow
Like mistletoe without a kiss or two
It's not Christmas without you

Bridge
I remember second grade and being told
That Santa wasn't real
Now it's Christmas eve and without you here to hold
That's exactly how I feel

Verse 3
Like a candy cane that's missing all it's stripes
Or a snowman who has lost his corncob pipe
Being merry is the hardest thing to do
It's not Christmas without you

THE PERFECT GIFT      MP3    RM
By Tim Bays/Michael Burns/Mary Kay Michaels
© 1995 Songcastle Music (ASCAP)
Vocal by Doug Wayne

Verse 1
She looks out the window, sees him in the snow
He’s fixing that old saddle thinking it might hold
For one more rodeo...one more show
Holding grandma’s diamond earring tight in her hand
She heads into town to see the pawnshop man
And prays that saddle’s there...she thinks the trade is fair

Chorus 1
She’s found the perfect gift
She tried so hard to find
She’d give up all she had
Right down to her last dime
There is no sacrifice, too great a price to pay
To give the perfect gift on Christmas day

Verse 2
The street’s lined with shoppers, they all say "hi"
In the pawnshop display case it catches his eye
The gift (that)he’ll buy, he steps inside
Says he’ll take that diamond earring, don’t care what it costs
It’s just like her grandma’s the one she lost
He feels like Santa Claus...with that velvet box

Chorus 2
He’s found the perfect gift
He tried so hard to find
He’d give up all he had
Right down to his last dime
There is no sacrifice, too great a price to pay
To give the perfect gift on Christmas day

Bridge
Under the tree there’s a saddle
For a horse he sold yesterday
To pay for one diamond earring
She thought she’d traded away

Chorus 2
They've found the perfect gift
They'd tried so hard to find
They'd give up all they had
Right down to their last dime
There is no sacrifice, too great a price to pay
To give the perfect gift on Christmas day

And if love’s the only thing you have to give away
You’ve found the perfect gift for Christmas day
